Positive Attitudes at Work (part 1 of 2)

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes.” (Charles R. Swindoll)
Each organization or company has its own unique corporate culture, like individuals. There are companies who demand that employees must always be on time (who would?), particularly mine, while others expect theirs to put extra time at work. Each has a unique way of doing things and sometimes has different set of criteria for a job well done. Consider also the different or unique “unwritten rules” that seem to pervade in an organization. Moreover, the specific character or nature of an organization usually emanates from the kind of leadership or management the bosses or business owners exercise.

Hence, you should understand these phenomena and adjust on how your workplace operates. This does not necessarily mean that you compromise all your values and simply conform to how the things are? The key is being able to ‘fit-in.’ Learn the rudiments, and try finding your place.

There is no perfect organization. Whether it has the stiffness character of IBM or the free-spirit atmosphere of Microsoft, an organization is not perfect, but may be ideal. Here is a myth dispeller, in case you think or claim that your organization is ‘perfect,’ here is the bad news –it is not. Why? Because, you are in it! ^^, So, if you are the type who hops from one company to the next in search of a perfect workplace –there is none my friend. Where you are right now may probably the best workplace there is, if you only have the right attitudes.

What are these ‘positive attitudes’? Let us discuss them on my next post. Mean time, your reactions are most welcome. Have your say please.
Attitudes are contagious. Are yours worth catching? (Dennis and Wendy Mannering)

I agree... there's no perfect company.
For me, as long as I'm not being forced to work my self to death and the pay's good... then it's good for me.
But, I sure do want my attitude to be worth catching. =)

I'm also a firm believer in attitude and the way it impacts on your whole approach to life and what outcomes will be achieved. Can't wait to see what more you have to say.

This is such an important topic for any age group. I am 57 and haven't worked outside the home all that much, but when I did I saw some really good work attitudes by people younger than me, and some really pathetic ones. Just recently I wrote on my blog Pentimento about a young waitress we encountered who no longer has a job because she felt "put upon" because she had to make a milk shake or two. Incredible, but true.

Attitudes are terribly contagious in the workplace. I've been in both situations, surrounded by people with negative attitudes and then those with positive ones. Sometimes I wished that the negative attitude people would have been taken aside and "spoken" to, as they brought down not only departments but the company as a whole.

@ shie

Being forced to work is servitude, that I abhor. I believe that work, though is a responsibility or an obligation, it should be accomplished with dignity and without force.

Good pay is always desirable. However, regardless of the pay, once you have accepted a job, then you are obliged to do it with gusto.

As always, thanks for the thoughtful comment shiera. ^^,

Am so glad we are on the same wave length there Tracey -thanks. The second part is coming. ^^,

@ webduck

Agree. To me, this is a very important concern that needed much attention, especially for the young professional out there.

@ jon

Thanks for the compliment and for the great header there. Hope to see ya more often jon.

@ mommie

True. I know you can relate well, being in the corporate world for quite sometime like me.

When I was heading my own department before, I have always advocated that if you cannot project a positive attitude at work, either you change or leave my department. Harsh huh.

To me, I would rather be harsh on that, than let a negative attitude influence others and bring the whole organization down. As you said, attitudes (good or bad) are contagious. I would rather put a cap on a bad attitude once and for all than let my team suffer.

Positive attitude are always preferable.

Unfortunately, my attitude is like the plague right now and it very contagious. I'll try to keep the virus at bay.

But it is nice when someone ELSE'S attitude is positive.

I think positive attitude is really the key too, because you can't please everyone and everything is not so pleasant. there's no such thing as a perfect job or workplace, just a passionate worker. Good site! keep more great posts coming!

True. Positive attitude always build good relationships, while negative ones tear down relationships and create walls.
